Two publications held together by a yellow ribbon: Julian GERMAIN (1962) his book “For every minute you are angry you lose sixty seconds of Happiness. Portrait of an elderly gentleman. Photographs by Julian Germain with the photo albums of Charles Snelling, published in Göttingen, by Steidlmack in 2005, and a little, silk-covered photo album dedicated to ‘Charlie’- “the elderly gentleman” from the book of Julain GERMAIN - with photos of two children, a girl and a boy. “Marks of Honour” is a series of rare publications in which a number of photographers were asked to choose a book that had inspired them and to honor that publication in their own unique way. Bertien van MANEN made an original and very personal tribute to the book of Julian GERMAIN by making this dedicated and dated album with 30 photos of her own children, because as she wrote in the copy og GERMAINS’s book “‘Missing Charlies Children I added mine…” Bertien van MANEN was a Dutch photographer, who has acquired a certain fame with documentary photography since the age of forty. She is known for her work on Russians, photographed shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union (see: “Hundred Summers Hundred Winters” (1994), later followed by “East Wind, West Wind”(2001), an interesting selection of photos of her travels to China.
